Matt's 9b field note
“Large, round fruit on a vigorous grower. Another strong summer performer.”
Background
A traditional Chinese jujube named for Shanxi Province, an important historic center of jujube cultivation. Background detail is thin: U.S. nursery sources describe it as a northern Chinese regional type traditionally grown for drying rather than a modern fresh-eating selection. No verified record of when it was introduced to the U.S.
Distinguishing traits
Extra-large rounded fruit, often exceeding 2 inches in diameter, coloring from green to glossy reddish-brown as it ripens. Crisp, firm, juicy flesh with honeyed apple flavor and mild tang at the crisp stage; dense flesh suited to drying once fully browned and sweetened on the tree. Self-fruitful, and a good pollinator for other jujubes.
