Honey Jar Jujube

Ziziphus jujuba

Matt's 9b field note

“Small, intensely sweet fruit for fresh eating. A kid favorite straight off the tree.”

Background

An importation from China by California nurseryman Roger Meyer (no relation to Frank Meyer), per NMSU's jujube guide. It has become one of the most popular small-fruited fresh-eating jujubes in the U.S. home-orchard trade. Precocious: it commonly fruits in the planting or grafting year.

Distinguishing traits

Small, round fruit with thin glossy skin and exceptionally crisp, juicy flesh packed with honeyed sweetness; snaps like a miniature apple fresh off the tree, turns chewy and date-like dried. Early ripening; among the most productive fresh-eating types. Benefits from a cross-pollinator for assured fruit set. Fine, attractive foliage.
