Classic Jasmine

Jasminum spp.

Matt's 9b field note

“'The classic jasmine you see everywhere.' Cultivar unspecified — possibly Jasminum polyanthum.”

Background

The most likely identity is Jasminum polyanthum (pink jasmine), the fast-growing twining vine from southern China that became the ubiquitous 'jasmine' of fences, arbors, and garden centers worldwide. It holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Matt's cultivar is unspecified, so this identity remains an inference.

Distinguishing traits

Vigorous evergreen twining vine 10-25 ft with glossy pinnate leaves. In late winter through spring it erupts in profuse clusters of slender pink buds that open to starry, intensely fragrant white flowers (pink on the petal backs) — the classic bicolor jasmine display. Blooms on the previous season's wood, so prune hard right after flowering.
