Chinese Dwarf Bamboo
Bambusa guangxiensis
Matt's 9b field note
“Planted spring 2022 — about 15 ft at 1.5 years.”
Background
A species from the lowland karst valleys of Guangxi Province in southern China. Popularized in Australia as a dense hedge bamboo and introduced to the US trade (notably by Tropical Bamboo in Florida) as a high-demand hedge plant. Thin published history beyond nursery-trade descriptions.
Distinguishing traits
Very dense, bushy, tight-clumping bamboo with dark-green foliage from ground to top; ideal hedge form. Reported mature height varies by source: US trade lists 15-18 ft with 2 in culms; Australian nurseries list 3-5 m (10-16 ft) and often hedge it at 8 ft. Extremely fast to fill in — Matt's reached ~15 ft in 1.5 years.
